When you work at home, one of the biggest challenges can be keeping the kids busy. There might be times when nothing seems to work for them and you have to get your work done, too. During these times, you have to do something you kids won’t expect.
There are jobs that don’t really need to be done at home. Do you think you could just bring your laptop or briefcase to the playground, library, or fast food restaurant and work there? You’ll still have to keep an eye on your kids, but at least they’ll be well distracted.
What about things you can do with your kids at home while working? Your older kids can be some help with some parts of you work, and they know that by helping, you’ll finish sooner and you can play with them.
Flexible working hours can also be a possibility. So go and play with the kids! Dance with them, play a board game, paint¦ just find something fun to do with them for a while. You shouldn’t do this often, since your kids might expect you to always leave you work to play with them.
This isn’t applicable to all work at home parents. There are some jobs that have set hours. In that case, have someone you can call on to help. This doesn’t have to be another adult. You could ask an older child from the neighbourhood to come distract and play with the kids so you can get your work done.
If your kids need your attention while you work frequently, then you might want to reconsider your office hours. Your kids’ needs do change as they grow, so what worked for them before might not now.
Keep in mind why you had wanted to work from home. You might have lots of priorities, but remember that your kids are one of them, too. You should let them feel how important they are to you.
